A 2016 CIPD ( Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) study found that a third of employees said they were under excessive pressure at work either every day or once or twice week. This could be worst with entrepreneurs especially those at the early stage of their entrepreneurial career.
When you’re self-employed, you may find that you have a lot of tasks unattended to. No matter what your business does, or where your expertise lies, you no longer have that one responsibility to do because you now multitask and have a lot to single handedly do. Such tasks may include the writing, the marketing, the creation of a product and lots more. This can really become overwhelming knowing that a lot of things need to be done. You may feel like you're sinking and needs to start swimming and floating. You could become stressed out with these thoughts and feelings. Stress is a natural part of the human experience. Psychological stress is known to suppress the immune system, making us more susceptible to illness. Stress is also associated with hypertension, heart disease, headaches, and cancer. Prolonged stress can also trigger depression, anxiety, and other psychological symptoms. Stress should be promptly and accurately managed.
When you feel like you're sinking with work, remember the following;
Take a deep breath.
Deep breathing is one of the best ways to lower stress in the body. This is because when you breathe deeply, it sends a message to your brain to calm down and relax. Deep breathing reduces stress level of the body, increases calmness, enhances focus and increases energy due to the increased oxygen supply to the body during the breathing exercise.
Make a list of all your outstanding tasks
Write down your to-do list; Analyze your schedule, responsibilities, and daily tasks. If you’ve got too much on your list, distinguish between the ‘shoulds’ and the ‘musts’. Drop tasks that aren’t truly necessary to the bottom of the list or eliminate them entirely.
Look at your Calendar
Calendar is essential to keeping track of your schedule. Make sure you write all your tasks which includes your classes, meetings, appointments, work commitments etc. on your calendar, and bring it with you anytime you might need to schedule a task. Look at your calendar before taking any other task. Learn to say 'no' when necessary to avoid overwhelming.
Identify the three most important tasks
Prioritizing your tasks ensures that you are spending your time and energy on the things that are most important to you. Look at your “to do” list and decide what needs to be done now, and what can wait. If unexpected things crept in, as they often happen in life, you may need to look back at your calendar and re-prioritize. It's impossible to do all and do them at the same time. So, prioritize your tasks.
Start work on the most critical item
Starting a project is often the hardest part. If you find out the tasks is bulky or complex to start, break them down into smaller achievable tasks, and complete them a step at a time. Remember to delegate tasks where necessary and possible.
Plan your diets
Eat nutrients rich foods, rest well and have adequate sleep.
